Heritage House Museum

The museum’s unique mirror-image facades, indoor brick bake oven and two-story privy preserve an atmosphere of the past in the once derelict house. Enjoy a picnic near our gardens or take a short stroll through parkland to the Rideau Canal and Old Sly’s Lock station. Presented year round are changing exhibitions and art shows, a variety of special events, workshops and school and children’s programs. Also available are meeting space rentals, gift shop and a Victorian setting for wedding and photographs.

Rideau Canal Visitors Centre

The Rideau Canal Visitors Centre is the flagship interpretation centre for the entire historic Rideau Canal system – a National Historic Site of Canada, a Canadian Heritage River, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Rideau Canal Museum is housed in a 19th century stone building which was once a mill: the Wood’s Mills Complex. Inside, high-technology displays and a variety of artifacts bring to life the history of the canal – its construction from 1826 to183, its role throughout history, as well as the distinct lifestyle and folklore associated with the Rideau Waterway.

We’re located in Smiths Falls, halfway between Ottawa and Kingston. You’ll find us in the beautiful and historic Wood’s Mills Complex located beside the main lock station. Ample parking is available below the water tower. For those coming by boat, we’re just a short walk from the docks in Victoria Park.

Hours: May 16 to September 1, Open daily from 9:00am to 4:30pm.

Admission: By Donation (Self Guided)

Groups: Tour groups welcome with advance notice. School Groups $1.90 per person. Adult/Senior Groups $3.40 per person. Outdoor guided tour of the Smith Falls Combined locks available for an additional charge.
